WAYS OF LOOKING

in preparation for my visit to the 'ways of looking' photography festival in bradford, i have had a look into the work of diane bielik from her series 'makeshift monuments.'

this exhibition is a series of staged images bielik decided to document as a result of the hungarian cultural and social centre in bradford closing down. the relationship between her and the club was her father who was a freedom fighter in the hungarian revolution and his membership at the club.

what struck me about the images was how she managed to maintain a sense of community and warmth about the club even after its closure.

bielik lives in london and is lecturer at westminster college.
